If your outdoor lighting makes your Lexington home look more like a high-security prison or a landing strip than a relaxing retreat, you aren't alone. Many homeowners in Central Kentucky invest in high-end fixtures only to realize the final result feels "off."
The truth is, great landscape lighting is about what you don't see just as much as what you do. At Evening Glow LLC, we specialize in designs that are invisible by day and breathtaking by night. Whether you are in the heart of Palomar or out toward Versailles, here are the seven most common mistakes we see and exactly how you can fix them.
This is the most common mistake in neighborhoods like Nicholasville and Richmond. Homeowners often line their driveway or walkway with perfectly symmetrical, evenly spaced path lights. While the intention is safety, the result is a harsh, distracting line of light that looks like a landing strip.
The Fix: Stagger your lights. Instead of a straight line, place fixtures on alternating sides of a path. Focus on lighting the features around the path: like a flower bed or a low stone wall: rather than just the concrete. This provides safety while creating a much softer, more natural look. If you need a hand with layout, check out our landscape lighting services.
Not all lights are created equal. We often see spotlights used for pathways or tiny decorative lights trying to illuminate a massive oak tree. Using a fixture with the wrong beam spread or wattage creates "hot spots": blindingly bright areas surrounded by total darkness.
The Fix: Match the fixture to the goal. Use wide-wash lights for walls and hedges, narrow-beam spotlights for tall trees, and shielded path lights for walkways. When we design custom fixtures for our clients, we ensure the "throw" of the light matches the scale of the object it is highlighting.

If you can see the actual bulb from your patio or the street, the design has failed. Glare is the enemy of ambiance. It blinds your guests and washes out the natural beauty of your landscaping. It’s a common DIY pitfall that makes a property look cluttered.
The Fix: Hide the source. The goal is to see the effect of the light, not the fixture itself. We use "invisible-by-day" techniques, tucking fixtures behind shrubs, rocks, or using specialized shrouds. For architectural features, permanent architectural lighting can be tucked into rooflines so it’s completely hidden from view during the day.
Many people light their yard but leave their house in the dark, or vice versa. If you only light the trees in your backyard, your home looks like a black hole from the street. Conversely, only lighting the front door makes the rest of the property feel disconnected.
The Fix: Identify three to five focal points. These might be a specimen tree, a water feature, or the stone pillars on your porch. Balance is key. Use architectural lighting to highlight the texture of your brick or stone, and pair it with landscape accents to pull the whole look together.

We see this all the time in Lexington: beautiful fixtures installed right in the middle of the lawn. Within six months, the weed whacker or the lawnmower has destroyed the finish or severed the wire.
The Fix: Keep fixtures in mulch beds or use in-ground well lights if you must light something from a grass area. This keeps your system safe from maintenance equipment. If your current system is looking a bit beat up, our maintenance team can help relocate fixtures and repair damaged lines.
Outdoor lighting in Central Kentucky has to deal with limestone-heavy soil, heavy rains, and freezing winters. Using cheap, "clip-on" connectors from a big-box store is a recipe for failure. These connectors eventually corrode, leading to flickering lights or a total system shutdown.
The Fix: Use professional-grade, waterproof connections. At Evening Glow LLC, we take pride in our veteran-owned work ethic, ensuring every wire is buried to the proper depth and every connection is sealed. We’re so confident in our installations that we offer a lifetime warranty. You can learn more about our commitment on our about page.
A common mistake is having a system that is either "all on" or "all off." Modern living requires more flexibility. You might want your architectural lights on until midnight, but your security lighting on until dawn.
The Fix: Invest in a smart controller. Our smart outdoor living solutions allow you to dim lights, set zones, and change colors (if you have color-changing fixtures) right from your phone. This is especially useful for holiday lighting or when you’re hosting a backyard party.

There is no magic number. It depends on the size of your property and what you want to highlight. It is almost always better to have fewer, high-quality fixtures placed perfectly than dozens of cheap lights scattered everywhere.
Absolutely. Many of our clients in Lexington combine their lighting projects with outdoor audio. It’s often easier to install both at once since the wiring can be run in similar trenches.
This is likely a "color temperature" issue. Most residential landscapes look best with a "warm white" (around 2700K to 3000K). If you mix different brands of LED bulbs, you might end up with mismatched colors that look messy.
If you work with us, you’re covered. Our lifetime warranty means you don't have to worry about product failures. For general issues, we provide extensive resources and a dedicated FAQ section.
Landscape lighting is an art and a science. It’s about understanding how light bounces off different surfaces and how to hide the "guts" of the system so your home looks pristine during the day.
